Interview with René: Owner of a Stunning Alpine House in the Dolomites

Nestled in the heart of the Dolomites, there exists a retreat that seamlessly blends the charm of old-world architecture with the ethos of modern living. This sanctuary, brought back to life from the remnants of an old building, stands as a testament to the beauty of preserving the past while embracing the future. Careful renovation has ensured that the essence of local architecture and the original materials remain at the forefront, creating a space that is both authentic and welcoming. Today, we have the pleasure of sitting down with René, the owner of this stunning alpine home, for an insightful conversation about his connection to the Dolomites and the unique experiences it offers.

Shari: René, it's a pleasure to be here in your beautiful alpine home. Can you share with us what drew you to the Dolomites and inspired you to create this haven?

René: Thank you for visiting, it's wonderful to have you here. For me and my family, Italy has always held a special place in our hearts. We were captivated by its rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and of course, the delicious cuisine. However, it was the Dolomites that truly stole our hearts. After years of exploring mountainous regions across different countries, we found ourselves enchanted by the unique beauty of these rugged rock masses. There's a sense of tranquility and authenticity here that is unmatched anywhere else.

Shari: Your connection to the Dolomites is evident. Could you tell us about your favorite activities or rituals that you enjoy in this stunning setting?

René: Absolutely. One of our favorite rituals is the simple joy of spending evenings together as a family. Whether it's cooking a hearty meal and gathering around the table or cozying up by the fireplace with a board game, these moments create lasting memories. Additionally, our evening walks at sunset through the quaint mountain hamlets nearby are truly special. The timeless beauty of the surroundings and the sense of serenity they evoke are incomparable.

Shari: It sounds like you've found a true sense of peace and tranquility in the Dolomites. How would you describe the feeling you experience when you're here?

René: Peaceful is the word that comes to mind. As a busy orthopedic surgeon, my life is often filled with appointments and responsibilities. However, when I'm in the Dolomites, all of that fades away. There's a profound sense of calmness that washes over me, allowing me to truly unwind and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. It's a feeling of coming home and reconnecting with the simple pleasures of life.

Shari: René, it is cleat that your connection to the Dolomites runs deep, and his stunning alpine home serves as a testament to the beauty and tranquility of this remarkable region.. Would you also be able to share a few of your favourite places to visit?

René: I have plenty! Here are a few of my suggestions:

Stay

Of course there is only one place I can truly recommend, my own home!

Plinius No. 085 | A Hidden Gem in the Dolomites. The house accommodates 8 adults and 4 children. 

Ski

Sella Ronda, a unique experience that allows you to ski around the Sella massif in one day, through four different valleys (Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba, and Val di Fassa) and three provinces (South Tyrol, Trentino, and Belluno) - all with just one ski pass. The breathtaking views make this one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the world, with its imposing peaks and steep cliffs. 

Eat

Let's not forget about the delicious Italian food on the slopes: Rifugio Emilio Comici is definitely recommended, very cozy and the food is excellent. The walls are decorated with photos of all the greats who have dined there before. And it's also in a beautiful location at the foot of the Sassolungo. You just have to make a reservation.

But there are many other beautiful restaurants on the slopes: Jimmy’s Hütte, Anna Hütte in Ortisei in Val Gardena, Aurelio Hütte on Passo Giau from Colle Santa Lucia to Cortina, and the Bioc Hütte. 

When you go to Cortina, there are several excellent restaurants to choose from. For example, there's Baita Pie Tofana , run by a chef who was a sous-chef at the renowned St. Hubertus restaurant in San Cassiano. There, Norbert Niederkoffler was in charge, and he was also responsible for sous-chef Michele Lazzarini, who has now embarked on a very interesting initiative, Contrada Bricconi , although it's a bit further away (near Bergamo), it's a fine example of organic cultivation in agriculture.

In Cortina, there's also San Brite , recently awarded a Michelin star, also exemplifying the current trend in Italian cuisine. Of course, these are all a bit more expensive.

There are also several excellent restaurants in hotels; such as Berghotel Ladinia or in Hotel Arkadia in Corvara, the restaurant Burje1968.

If you're looking for something more basic Ladin cuisine, you might consider Maso Runch in Badia, an old farmhouse where they source products directly from their own stable and land for their restaurant.

In short, there's too much to list,and there's a tremendous amount more. As you know, life in Italy largely revolves around the dining table.

Summer & Winter

The Dolomites is a place to be enjoyed all year round with plenty of outdoor activities, from skiing to mountain biking and hiking. To decide which season is the best, or the most beautiful…. I leave that up to you because I can't answer this question, it is all stunning!
