Perfect Italian Weekend

Perfect Italian Weekend - Langa Astigiana

A perfect weekend in Italy without the limitations of time, budget, or distance. Every week we ask interesting and inspirational Italians, and Italians at heart, to take us along for a perfect, local weekend. This week Lisa en Erik, the owner of La Casa dei Caprioli, will take us along to the beautiful region around her home.

There are so many beautiful places I could share in Piemonte, but I’ve chosen to focus on the area surrounding our own charming village of Bubbio. This also ties in perfectly with our B&B, La Casa dei Caprioli.

The region we’re in is less touristy than the Langhe (known for famous wines and villages like Barolo and Barbaresco), but it’s precisely the authentic rural life here that captured our hearts.

Saturday:

Morning:
Start your day with breakfast in the picturesque village of Bubbio. Choose between Bar Machi, known for its excellent cappuccinos, or Bar il Baretto, which offers a wider selection of brioches. At Bar Machi, you’ll experience a classic Italian bar vibe, standing at the counter alongside locals. For a more relaxed, sit-down breakfast, Bar il Baretto is ideal.

After breakfast:
A scenic walk is always a good idea. From Bubbio, hike through vineyards, hazelnut groves, and forests to the nearby historic village of Monastero Bormida—a 45-minute stroll. Monastero Bormida is renowned for its stunning centuries-old Roman bridge and monastery. On open days, you can explore the monastery and shop at market stalls featuring delicious local products. If it’s not an open day, enjoy a coffee at Caffé Sport or Caffé Verba Volant. Feeling adventurous? Follow the Italian tradition of a morning aperitivo with a glass of Alta Langa or an Aperol Spritz, always served with delicious snacks.

Lunch:
Enjoy lunch at Osteria il Caveau in Monastero Bormida, a cozy restaurant with outdoor seating and lovely views (weather permitting). Alternatively, walk back to Bubbio for lunch at Tre Colline in Langa, a favorite spot where Paula, the owner, serves the best Piedmontese dishes, often featuring the local cheese Roccaverano DOP. Their terrace overlooking the vineyards is a highlight.

Afternoon:
After lunch, it’s time for a wine tasting. If you skipped dessert, stop by Bar il Baretto for homemade Italian gelato. For wine lovers, head to Vini Biologici Torelli in Bubbio, one of Italy’s first organic wineries, where you can enjoy an indoor tasting. For breathtaking views, visit Forteto della Luja, located a bit further away.

Dinner:
For a special dinner, we recommend Madonna della Neve in Cessole, a beloved spot for authentic Piedmontese cuisine. If you prefer something lighter, Pizzeria da Frankino is the place for fresh, thin-crust pizzas.

Wine Bar:
End the evening at Salute Winebar in Bubbio. Beautifully designed, it offers a curated selection of the region’s finest wines.

Sunday:

Morning:
Begin your day in Roccaverano, the highest village in the area, offering stunning panoramic views. Have breakfast at Osteria del Bramante, located in the main square.

From here, you can take one of the many walking trails in the area. A great option is a section of the 5 Torri trail, which winds through the picturesque landscapes between Bubbio and Roccaverano. If you prefer a more relaxed start, drive through the surrounding hills and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. In autumn, you might even catch a glimpse of the snow-capped Alps.

Lunch:
For lunch, head to A Testa in Giù in San Giorgio Scarampi. This restaurant features a beautiful terrace with spectacular views and serves classic Piedmontese dishes.

Afternoon/Aperitivo:
Continue your day in Loazzolo, where you’ll find La Sosta in Langa, a charming wine bar with a panoramic terrace. It’s the perfect place to relax, sip a drink, and savor their delicious charcuterie boards.

Dinner:
For dinner, revisit one of the earlier recommendations, or if you’re near Loazzolo, try Fin Cui Na Le in Sessame for excellent pizza.
