A Perfect Italian Weekend - Ravenna
A perfect weekend in Italy without the limitations of time, budget, or distance. Every week we ask interesting and inspirational Italians, and Italians at heart, to take us along for a perfect, local weekend. This week Emanuela from Gironda will take is to Ravenna!
Meet Emanuela and Gironda
My name is Emanuela, and I was born in the charming city of Ravenna. I am the founder and general manager of Gironda, my latest project in the world of hospitality.
Gironda embodies a fresh vision I like to call B-Luxe, a blend of the intimacy and authenticity of a B&B with the meticulous attention to detail and elegance of a five-star hotel.
The property offers three uniquely designed suites, each with its own color palette and concept, accommodating a maximum of six guests. This small scale ensures a serene and tranquil experience, fostering meaningful interactions and creating a personal connection with our guests.
Located in the heart of Ravenna, Gironda is perfectly situated in a city rich in culture and history, boasting eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, Dante's Tomb, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and much more.
A Perfect Weekend in Ravenna
One of the things I adore about Ravenna is how accessible everything is—whether on foot or by bike. Life here flows at a calm, unhurried pace, making it the perfect destination for relaxation.
Saturday
We begin the weekend with breakfast at Pasticceria Veneziana, one of Ravenna’s oldest pastry shops, established in 1864. Nestled among the charming pedestrian streets of the city center, it’s the ideal spot to start the day.
Next, it’s time to explore Ravenna’s UNESCO treasures. Start with San Vitale and Galla Placidia, both just a short walk away. Then continue to the Neonian Baptistery and the Chapel of Sant’Andrea, where you can enjoy a refreshing tea or coffee in the serene botanical garden nearby.
For lunch, nothing beats a classic piadina romagnola, a traditional flatbread from the region. I recommend trying the classic combination of prosciutto crudo, squacquerone cheese, and arugula at Profumo di Piadina (Via Cairoli 24). This small kiosk often has a line, but it’s absolutely worth the wait.
Before continuing your tour, make a stop at the Covered Market, an enchanting space blending old and new. Once filled with traditional market stalls, it now houses vendors offering a wide array of local products.
The next stop is Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, another stunning mosaic masterpiece. To dive deeper into Ravenna’s ancient mosaic traditions, visit Koko Mosaico, a workshop where Luca and Arianna keep the craft alive using traditional techniques. Located right near the monument, you can even participate in a hands-on session, learning to cut stones and create your own mosaic—a truly unforgettable experience!
For dinner, I suggest Clarice Restaurant, where local traditions are reimagined with a contemporary twist.
Sunday
Start your day with brunch at Alighieri Caffè e Cucina, and then visit Dante’s Tomb and the adjacent museum.
For lunch, indulge in a traditional Romagna meal at Ca’ de Ven, a wine bar and restaurant that’s a must-visit. If it’s summer, consider heading to the seaside—just 9 km away—to enjoy a leisurely lunch at Bagno Ondina.
As the day winds down, return to the city and visit the MAR (Ravenna Art Museum), which always features fascinating exhibitions and cultural initiatives—a perfect way to wrap up your weekend.
Ravenna, with its rich history, stunning mosaics, and tranquil charm, offers a truly unforgettable experience. At Gironda, we’re proud to welcome you to this magical city, providing a haven of comfort and warmth to make your stay truly special.
