Small Country Dwelling

Italië > Sicily
users 4 bed 2 bath 2

Prices: From €295   [2 guests] | Bookings: ellen@plinius.homes

Immerse yourself in the charm of this small B&B, where contemporary design meets the echoes of history. The heart of the accommodations is a central courtyard, once home to animals and crops, cleverly repurposed into functional spaces using the original mangers and feed bins.

Architect Patrizia Sbalchiero artfully blended traditional materials and techniques, echoing the rustic simplicity of the original structures. The authentic stone, reed ceilings, and weathered walls tell a story of times past, uniting the allure of the countryside with modern style.

Owner and interior designer Andreina Lebole adorned the interiors with a mix of Scandinavian and German furnishings, alongside traditional Sicilian craftsmanship. The spaces also boast artwork by Elisabetta Reicher and the gentle, ambient lighting of Davide Groppi's fixtures.

In this inviting retreat, you can enjoy your private spaces or embrace the tranquility of the countryside in shared areas—basking by the pool, enjoying a game of croquet or bocce, losing yourself in a good book from the library, and relishing life's simple joys.

To truly taste Sicily, join the olive harvest in September and early October for an authentic experience.

The rooms

There are two rooms looking onto the swimming pool and the olive trees, which have been conceived as a natural extension of the space outside.   The eyes, soaking up the beauty of the landscape, are not distracted by the internal spaces.  The original structure is enhanced by the simplicity and linearity of the furniture,  mainly white and in subdued shades of natural colors.

Room 1

The wide wall is made up of blocks of tuff. Its deep cavity, once used to hold grain, now houses a small fireplace.  The amber colour of the walls and floor are in tune with the original rustic furniture and with pieces of contemporary design.

Area, 35 square metres | Bed size,  200 x 200 cm | Accessible to the disabled

Room 2

The moon shines in the room. The old stable and its manger have now been converted into a comfortable bedroom with a bathroom. The tuff flooring and the white walls show off the modern handmade Caltagirone tiles which embellish the bathtub and the walls.

Area,  40 square metres | Bed size, 180 x 200 cm

Relaxation

The garden and the swimming pool are for you. Sun loungers and deckchairs invite guests to relax and sunbathe. The days pass slowly: a bicycle ride, a walk amongst the trazzere (tracks) all around,  or a game of bowls.

One can also learn Sicilian cuisine or sit comfortably in the library reading one of the many books available or listening to music.

Everyone chooses his spot: a sofa, a seat on the terrace, a place in the shade, a beam of sunlight … and at sunset they all gather for an aperitif.

Food and Wine

When you wake up your breakfast is already waiting for you. During the day one can have a snack for lunch or take a picnic basket, an aperitif beside the swimming pool, and then dinner. This offers a choice of dishes, simple but prepared with great care, which change every day and combine Sicilian tradition with modernity.

Extra virgin olive oil

The extra virgin olive oil is produced here and obtained from a mono cultivar tonda iblea. In the olive grove pesticides and chemical fertilizers are banned, together with anything which is harmful to nature. Irrigation is provided by rain alone and the fresh and breezy nights, even in the hottest months, ward off the attacks of insects and pests.   A very ancient cultivar, tonda iblea produces a bright green oil, with a strong fragrance of unripe tomatoes and freshly cut grass and with a hint of artichoke. It is delicate and rounded, slightly spicy, and rich in polyphenols. The harvesting of the olives, done on the tree and totally by hand, takes place at the end of September and the beginning of October when the fruit is still green. The olives are then placed in small perforated crates to prevent oxidization and the effects of heat. Then they are immediately transported to the oil press. From cold pressing, we obtain an oil with enhanced sweetness and roundness.
