The English Patient in Tuscany

MONASTERO SANT'ANNA IN CAMPRENA

Sant'Anna in Camprena - former Benedictine Olivetan Monastery of the 15th century - is just 6 km from Pienza, whose historic center has been a UNESCO heritage site since 1996. The imposing and sober structure of great charm and profound spirituality, it is located in the most beautiful countryside in the world: between the Val d'Orcia Park - UNESCO World Heritage Site SINCE 2004 - and the Crete Senesi. In the Refectory there is a splendid cycle of frescoes (1503) by Antonio Bazzi known as Il Sodoma. The Italian-American director Anthony Minghella has chosen Sant'Anna in Camprena to shoot some of the most famous scenes of the film “The English Patient”, winner of 9 Academy Awards.

Part of the monastery is the farm restaurant. On one of the walls of the dining room stands the huge 17th century print depicting the family tree of the Piccolomini family. Enea Silvio Piccolomini, a native of Pienza, a symbol of the Italian Renaissance, became Pope with the name of Pius II. For the catering, “organic” farm products are used in part, including extra virgin olive oil and wines of great value such as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG. The cuisine is simple, but very accurate and tasty, as it is in the Tuscan peasant tradition.

The farm specializing in receiving groups hosts several art courses every year: painting, drawing, photography, music. It is in the beautiful Church of Sant'Anna in Camprena that important classical music concerts are held during the summer.
