N° 028 | Oscar Niemeyer Inspiration

Italy > Dolomites
users 2 bed 1 bath 1

A hybrid between a guest house and a nature observatory, a walk-in spatial sculpture that only unfolded its true qualities and meditative effect after you walk in. Set in the midst of the South Tyrolean mountains. The surrounding glass facade provides the sensation of complete freedom and helps you to disconnect from stress and connect with nature.

For hours you can just let your gaze wander over the Tinne Valley and the mountains until the border between nature and living space seems to dissolve ... Light and weather, time of day and season shape the atmosphere. An extraordinary glass building by architect Martin Gruber, inspired by Oscar Niemeyer.

The glass solitaire is embedded in the topography in the middle of a fantastic landscape. Like a walkable sculpture, the building nestles to the site and only reveals the spatial structure when approaching the building. The project was designed as a counterpoint to the usual holiday architecture. The shape arises from the intention to leave a statement for a sensitive approach to the landscape.

The Space

The inner space only reveals itself just before the entrance: a glass body appears under the concrete slab of the green roof. A mobile external curtain gives the facade privacy and protection from the sun. The ambivalence of the room is further increased by additionally planted trees. The exterior design gives the building solidity and justifies the geometry of the floor and ceiling as a reaction to the immediate closeness to nature. By using minimalistic interior design the focus of attention is all on the view of nature. Guests can make use of a free-standing kitchen unit with a cantilevered dining table, seating furniture by a revolving fireplace and a daybed that can be separated with a curtain. The bedroom, located between the bathroom and the living area, offers privacy despite the open layout due to its shape and positioning at the slope. The number of materials was reduced to concrete, oak wood and local loden and is masterfully implemented by befriended craftsmen.

Location

SouthTyrol is Italy's best-kept secret. A fascinating area is hidden between the peaks and valleys of the Italian Alps. A mountain-blessed region with crumbling castles, cliff-clinging vineyards and mirror-still lakes, situated beneath the thundering Dolomites. It truly has a ‘wow' factor!

There is as much or as little you would like to do at the guest house; Reading or writing a book, listening to music, playing the guitar (there is a guitar in the guesthouse), observing animals (for example deer at dawn or dusk) and nature in general (there are binoculars in the guesthouse), wood carving, painting with acrylic paint, hiking, biking and relaxing afterwards in the guesthouse, going out for dinner or making a barbecue with local products and herbs.

City trips to Brixen, Klausen, Bozen, Meran. In winter sledging, ski touring and snowshoeing (for example on the Plose or Seiser Alm).

The highlights are Sunrise on the Peitlerkofel mountain or Latzfons Cross Chapel; natural-track sledging in winter together with the vice-world champion Martin; the Unesco World Heritage Geisler mountain peaks in Villnöss.
