Italy > Tuscany
users 14 bed 7 bath 6

Built in the first half of the fourteenth century, passed to the Medici in the fifteenth century and was then chosen, in the late sixteenth century, by Grand Duke Francesco I as the residence of Bianca Cappello, his lover and later second wife. A secret passage still existing, allowed the two to meet at the Medici Villa without anyone knowing. Once they were officially married, Francesco and Bianca were killed by poisoning. The love between them was strongly opposed and still constitutes one of the most famous episodes in the Medici history.

Throughout its history, the villa has changed hands numerous times, housing occupants ranging from noblemen to farmers, enduring both prosperous and challenging periods. In the 1960s, an Italian businessman acquired the villa, meticulously restoring it to its former splendor. But what then happend shocked everyone, the owner filled it with 1960 design furniture and hang the walls with Pop Art. Being involved within this new art movement and as a friend of Andy Warhol, it was for the owner the most logic choice for the interior design of the villa. However, his friends, family and acquaintances were not quite ready for this bold move. Perhaps this bold departure from tradition explains why this remarkable estate remains relatively unknown. It stands as a time capsule from the 1960s, wrapped in the architectural vestiges of the 14th century—a testament to the visionary spirit of its creator.

The Space

The six rooms on the first floor, along with the main floor living rooms, are meticulously furnished with a strong emphasis on art and design. Furniture are design classic from the 60s and 70s by Poltronova complements paintings and sculptures from the Italian Pop Art movement of the 1960s, featuring works by renowned artists such as Ettore Sottsass, Valerio Adami, Mario Ceroli, and the entire Pistoia school including Roberto Barni, Umberto Buscioni, and Gianni Ruffi. Guests are invited to explore and enjoy the shared relaxation areas, where they can admire the harmonious blend of artistic expressions and styles.

The contemporary aspect is complemented by the historical essence of the building, which retains the secrets of its Medici heritage, including access to a mysterious passage rumored to have been traversed by Bianca Cappello in the 1500s to rendezvous with her lover, Francesco I de' Medici.

The villa is completed by a magnificent swimming pool, offering all modern amenities, and an expansive garden enveloped by the verdant beauty of the Tuscan countryside.

Art

The love for Contemporary Art has always been at the heart of the Villa. What makes it unique among the many splendid Tuscan villas, is precisely the private collection of works of Italian Pop Art that can be found in the living rooms on the ground floor next to the Poltronova furnishings of the 60s. The Pistoi School is certainly the protagonist here and, next to works by Valerio Adami such as the 'Pandora's Vase' and the 'Menta' totem by Ettore Sottsass, there are paintings by Roberto Barni, Umberto Buscioni and Gianni Ruffi. The works of the private collection were enriched in September 2019 with a new piece by Benni Bosetto, a young Milanese artist, who is in addition to the 7 artists represented in the villa.

Going to the Chapel

If you are looking for the perfect venue for a destination wedding or party (up to 250 guests), then you have found your match. There is even a small church with a central viewpoint of the lower garden. The ceiling of the small church, dedicated to San Francesco di Paola, was decorated internally by a Florentine artist. The villa has an exceptional 180-degree panorama of Florence and a 20-hectare park. The gardens were designed by Porcinai (one of the most important landscape architects of the twentieth century).
