This enchanting seaside village is steeped in a rich history, with its origins as a traditional tuna factory dating back to the 13th century. The main building, the Tuna factory itself, is a beautifully preserved complex of buildings that once served as a crucial hub for Sicily's tuna industry. Additionally, there is a small chapel, the ancient home of the chief of the Tuna factory, and spaces where the fishermen were housed. Its stone walls whisper tales of bustling fish markets, salty sea breezes, and the vibrant traditions of generations past. 

Today, it has evolved into a charming destination with fifteen apartments where you can recharge while enjoying the stunning coastal scenery and the crystal-clear waters that once teemed with tuna. It's a place where the echoes of Sicilian history harmonize with the gentle lapping of the Mediterranean waves, making it a must-visit for travelers seeking a taste of authentic Sicilian culture and coastal beauty.
 

Sicily's tuna industry

Sicily's tuna industry has a storied history that stretches back for centuries. Its roots can be traced to ancient civilizations, including the Phoenicians, who were among the first to establish tuna fishing practices in the region. The island's strategic location in the Mediterranean made it a prime location for these early fishers. Over time, Sicily's tuna industry flourished, with numerous coastal communities developing specialized techniques for catching and preserving tuna, often using elaborate systems of nets and traps. Tuna became a valuable commodity, not only for its culinary significance but also for its economic importance.

The tuna factories in Sicily have stopped their commercial tuna fishing operations long ago, like many traditional tuna fisheries in the Mediterranean. Over the years, the demand for tuna, especially bluefin tuna, led to overfishing in the Mediterranean. This resulted in a significant decline in tuna populations, making it unsustainable to continue traditional tuna fishing practices

Luckily this Tuna fishing village has been preserved and repurposed as a cultural and historical site, and gives the opportunity to experience its rich history and architectural charm. While it may no longer be operational as a tuna fishing facility, it remains a symbol of Sicily's maritime heritage.

This is the place where the Bagliera, the female guardian of the village, lived and where bread for the fishermen was baked every day.
