Castello di Reschio – An Umbrian Dream Realised

Hidden in the rolling hills of Umbria, on the edge of the Tuscan border, lies a place so enchanting, that it feels almost like a well-kept secret. Castello di Reschio, a thousand-year-old castle brought back to life by a visionary family, is not just a hotel—it’s a world of its own. Here, design, history, and nature come together in quiet harmony, offering a rare kind of beauty that’s both deeply refined and wonderfully unpretentious.

This remarkable transformation is the work of Count Benedikt Bolza, an architect and designer who, together with his wife Nencia and a devoted family team, turned the once crumbling Castello into a soulful retreat. What began as a family restoration project has become a masterpiece of Italian hospitality—an estate where every stone, every lamp, and every piece of furniture has been designed or selected with care.

A Castle Full of Life and Stories

At the heart of the estate is the thousand-year-old Castello itself, whose ancient walls now hold space for warm gatherings and quiet escapes alike. The communal areas are a gentle celebration of craftsmanship and time. The Palm Court is a dreamy place to sit beneath soaring archways with a coffee or evening spritz, while the Library, filled with books and character, invites slow mornings with a newspaper and no plans.

The Bathhouse, tucked into the old wine cellars, is something out of a dream—vaulted ceilings, flickering candles, a hammam, and a saltwater pool, all designed for unhurried, sensory indulgence. Nearby, Ristorante Alle Scuderie, with its airy interiors and garden views, offers seasonal, estate-grown Umbrian dishes served with quiet elegance.

Suites with Soul

Each of the 36 rooms and suites at Reschio feels like a secret corner of the castle made just for you. Some are romantic hideaways in the old watchtower, others grand and sprawling with views over the olive groves. What they all share is a deep attention to detail—bespoke furniture, soft linens, layered textures, and a quiet sense of restraint. Nothing shouts, everything whispers luxury.

The Equestrian Heart of Reschio

Reschio is, at its soul, an equestrian estate—home to a world-class stable of pure-bred Andalusian horses, personally introduced by Count Antonio Bolza in the late 90s. These magnificent animals are not just for show: guests can take riding lessons, enjoy hacks through the wild hills, or watch evening dressage performances that feel like poetry in motion.

This deep connection to nature and horses runs through the entire estate, grounding it in a slower, more soulful rhythm.

Experiences

Days at Reschio can be as active or peaceful as you like. There are tennis courts tucked between the olive trees, e-bikes to explore the vast estate, and cooking classes that begin with foraging walks and end with homemade pasta. You can join the gamekeeper on a nature walk, go truffle hunting with a Lagotto pup, or spend an afternoon at the estate’s secluded lake, paddleboarding or simply lounging in the sun.

For those who love the finer things, wine and olive oil tastings reveal the richness of Umbria’s soil, while the BB for Reschio design studio—run by Benedikt himself—is a treasure trove of beautiful, hand-crafted furniture and lighting.

A Place to Return To

It’s rare to find a place like Castello di Reschio—an estate that feels both grand and deeply personal. This is not just a hotel, but a living, breathing project of love and vision. It’s the kind of place you think about long after you leave, where time slows down, senses heighten, and every detail—no matter how small—tells a story. It’s ultimate luxury redefined: not flashy, but quietly exquisite, rooted in nature, craftsmanship, and soul.

For those who believe that where you stay is just as important as where you go, Reschio is one of those unforgettable places that remind you what travel is really about.
