N° 042 | Ancient Townhouse Reborn
Sandra and Simon, an art director and an architect took on the challenge to renovate a beautiful, but dilapidated house in the charming town of Montegrazie, Liguria. Simon was born and raised in Liguria and Sandra comes from Germany but used to holiday with her family for many years in Montegrazie. Eventually, they met and fell in love, with each other and with Montegrazie.
There was one house in particular in the village that always intrigued them. This old, abandoned ruin was practically falling apart and they were really the only ones that saw its unique charm and had the desire to take on this renovation project. But sometimes you just have to take risks, even if everyone else thinks it is crazy.
Sandra and Simon have done an amazing job, the result is absolutely stunning! They used reclaimed and traditional materials, old Ligurian patterns, and fabrics. Local artisans helped and everything is handcrafted and custom-made, It had to be as simple as possible. The main source of inspiration was the findings of everyday life in Liguria, the house itself, and especially its surroundings. The end result is a traditional Ligurian home that retains its soul and has stayed true to its essence.
The Space
The house is located in the peaceful medieval village of Montegrazie, surrounded by centuries-old olive trees and with a breathtaking sea view. The ground floor of this stunning property boasts ancient vaulted interiors made of beautiful stone and polished concrete. The kitchen is well-equipped and the open dining area is spacious and inviting, offering guests the opportunity to enjoy wonderful dinners while enjoying the beautiful Mediterranean gardens. A free-standing staircase leads to the modern living room with vaulted ceilings, and two double bedrooms that are flooded with natural light and offer enchanting sea views.
Located towards the back of the property are another double bedroom and a single room, which can also function as a study. Both rooms provide direct access to the sunroof terrace and a shaded loggia, where guests can indulge in the pleasure of dining or sipping an aperitif in the sun. Through the back exit of the house lies a charming small piazza that immediately immerses guests in authentic village life. This sanctuary of rural simplicity perfectly blends warm earth tones and cool natural style with a minimalist modern aesthetic, creating a harmonious atmosphere
*It is important to note that due to its central location, the house cannot be directly accessed by car. Guests will need to walk approximately 100m uphill from the parking lot to the property, adding to the allure of this exclusive retreat.
