N° 084 | Renovated Podere Umbria
In the heart of Umbria, nestled amidst the rolling hills and verdant landscapes, lies a hidden gem—a once dilapidated farmhouse transformed into an eco-friendly haven. Discovered in 2019, this enchanting abode captivated its owners, who poured their hearts and souls into its revival. Over four years of meticulous renovation, with the invaluable assistance of local artisans, they breathed new life into every corner of the property. From the luxurious interiors to the sprawling gardens and infinity pool, every detail was crafted with sustainability in mind. Harnessing the power of solar energy, utilizing reusable materials, and employing eco-conscious practices, they've created a sanctuary that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. Amidst the tranquility of the countryside, guests are invited to immerse themselves in the beauty of this timeless retreat, where the allure of the past meets the promise of a sustainable future.
The Space
The Podere (Farmhouse) consists of two units: the main house with a living room, kitchen, 2 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, and the self-contained apartment with 3 bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, and living room. This makes it the perfect home to share with two families, allowing them to stay together under one roof while still enjoying the privacy of their own space.
Ground Floor:
From the modern, fully equipped kitchen (six-burner stove (induction), three ovens, dishwasher, large fridge-freezer), you enter the living room with a seating area, fireplace, and dining table. Here too, French doors lead to the terrace. All floors have underfloor heating, the windows are triple-glazed and fitted with mosquito screens.
First Floor:
Via a lit staircase, you walk to the ground floor level: here is the master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom (with a double shower cabin with 2 rain showers, a bathtub, toilet, and double sink). Next to it is the guest room/study with its own ensuite bathroom (with a rain shower and toilet). The three-seater sofa can serve as a comfortable double bed.
The apartment:
The apartment on the second floor is entirely self-contained and boasts its own entrance. Accessed via a separate staircase at the rear of the main house, you arrive on the upper floor with its own front door. Upon entry to the apartment, you find yourself in a bright, spacious living room with a fireplace and generous seating area. The open-plan kitchen is fully equipped, complete with a beautiful teak dining table. Adjacent to the kitchen lies the first double bedroom. Moving further into the flat, you'll discover the second double bedroom with a modern bathroom adjacent (featuring a glass shower cubicle with a rainfall shower, basin, and toilet). Finally, there's the last bedroom, also suitable for two people. The apartment includes its own terrace or seating area on the side of the house.
Garden and Pool:
In front of and beside the house, there is a terrace that spans an impressive 5 meters in width, partially covered to provide optimal comfort in both good and bad weather. The special pizza oven and BBQ are ready to be used for delightful evenings of making your own pizzas. Surrounding the house is a beautifully landscaped garden, with a private forest beyond. Feel free to wander among the wildflowers and herbs and enjoy the large lawn in front of the terrace. The infinity pool, measuring 12 by 6 meters (with both shallow and deep sections), also features a spacious sun terrace and is fully equipped with lighting and a toilet. From the infinity pool, you can gaze out over the entire valley.
The Surroundings
The Podere is located near Ficulle, a charming commune, known for its rich history and picturesque landscapes, but a fun fact about this area is its underground world. Ficulle boasts an extensive network of ancient caves, some of which have been transformed into wine cellars by local vintners. These caves have been used for centuries, originally for defensive purposes and storage, and now play a significant role in local wine production, offering a unique environment for aging wines.
Visiting Ficulle offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it a worthwhile destination. While in Ficulle, you can explore its medieval architecture, enjoy the serene countryside, and, of course, taste some of the exquisite local wines matured in its underground cellars. Additionally, its proximity to other Umbrian gems like Orvieto, Perugia, and Todi means you can easily explore more of what this enchanting region has to offer.
Tucked within easy reach of Rome's ancient grandeur and Florence's Renaissance beauty, lies a splendid day-trip opportunity. Yet, it's Arezzo that truly enchants, especially on the first weekend of each month. This is when its storied streets come alive with a mesmerizing brocante/flea market, offering a treasure trove of finds that echo tales from the past.
