N° 100 | Design Meets Dolcezza
A Scandi-Styled Sanctuary in the Heart of Puglia
Tucked away on a quiet street in the small village of Uggiano la Chiesa—just ten minutes from the Adriatic coast—this beautifully restored home is the kind of place you want to keep a secret. Created by Swedish-Italian couple Maj-La and Claudio, who are also the creative minds behind ATP Atelier, it’s a house that effortlessly blends the soulful details of southern Italy with clean, Scandinavian elegance.
They fell in love with this old palazzo for its soaring ceilings, its intricate terrazzo floors, and the faded frescoes that told stories of the past. The couple’s vision was simple yet precise: preserve the character of the building while infusing it with calm, minimalistic style and natural materials. The result? A peaceful retreat that feels at once deeply Italian and unmistakably Nordic—perfect for slow summer living, long meals with friends, and doing absolutely nothing in style.
The Space
The house flows across multiple levels and opens up like a quiet adventure. You’re greeted first by a peaceful patio, then step into vaulted rooms flooded with light and tastefully furnished with curated pieces in wood, stone, linen, and seagrass. There’s a calm confidence to the interior: muted tones, elegant minimalism, and just enough detail to make you pause and smile.
The kitchen, with its stone island and high ceilings, is the heart of the home. It opens onto the garden and is part of an open-plan space that includes a dining table and a large living area with cosy nooks. Whether you’re cooking with local produce, flipping through cookbooks, or simply leaning on the counter with a glass of wine, it’s a space that invites you to gather, relax, and take your time.
The Bedrooms
The house sleeps eight across four spacious double bedrooms, all with their own bathrooms. One bedroom is on the ground floor (perfect for those avoiding stairs), and three are on the upper floor, accessible via two charming outdoor staircases.
Each bedroom has its own feel but shares a quiet luxury: soft colours, beautiful textiles, vaulted ceilings, and lovingly restored tiles and frescoes. The beds are comfortable box springs, and each room has just the right touch of simplicity—perhaps a sculptural mirror, a linen-covered bench, or a vintage chair. One of the upstairs rooms even includes a daybed, ideal for a child or extra guest.
Outdoor Living
Step outside and you’re in your own Mediterranean oasis. The garden stretches out with paved terraces, shady corners, and a gentle sense of privacy despite being in the middle of the village. There’s a dining table under a pergola that comfortably seats twelve, a built-in BBQ, and a lounge area with soft cushions facing the house.
The small pool (6.8 x 3m) is perfect for cooling off after a morning at the beach, and there’s an outdoor shower for rinsing off the salt. A rooftop terrace with sun loungers offers views over the terracotta rooftops of the village and, in the distance, the glittering Adriatic Sea.
The Location
The village of Uggiano la Chiesa is authentic and welcoming, with cafés, local shops, and a handful of restaurants within walking distance. You can grab a cappuccino and fresh bread in the morning, stroll to dinner in the evening, and feel fully immersed in the gentle rhythm of southern Italian life.
The coast is just a ten-minute drive away. Here, the Adriatic reveals itself in a mix of sandy beaches and rocky coves with crystal-clear water—perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and lazy days by the sea. For cultural adventures, nearby towns like Otranto, Santa Cesarea Terme, and the stunning Baroque city of Lecce offer plenty to explore.

Why We Love It
This home is for design lovers, sun seekers, and anyone who dreams of slow mornings, sun-drenched afternoons, and warm, stylish spaces with soul. It’s not flashy or overdone—just beautifully balanced. Step inside and you feel like you're in a serene countryside retreat, with a pool and Mediterranean garden; step outside and you're in the heart of village life, picking up fresh croissants at the bakery, enjoying a morning espresso at the bar, or joining locals for an aperitivo in the square. It’s the best of both worlds—a true meeting of north and south, past and present, and everything that makes Puglia so special.
