No. 044 | Characterful Tuscan Escape
On the soft border between Tuscany and Umbria, just outside the small village of Petrignano del Lago, lies a farmhouse with a long and layered story. Dating back to 1768 and lovingly renewed over centuries, it was most recently restored by a couple whose lives have taken them across Europe, New York, London, and Dublin — a creative pair Federico (Fede) Riezzo and his Irish wife Louisa Jane (Lou Lou) Moran, came to Italy with a vision: to breathe warmth, personality, and a little playful design spirit into a traditional Italian villa.
Together with close friends and now business partners, they shaped a home that brings together old-world craftsmanship and contemporary comfort. The result is a place where Italian design heritage sits easily beside modern living; where hospitality is personal, generous, and grounded in experience.
The Space
Inside, the villa feels like a gentle conversation between eras. Vintage pieces and contemporary design sit alongside original farmhouse features; custom furniture crafted by local artisans in wood, stone, and metal brings texture and soul to every corner.
There’s an unmistakable playfulness to the interiors — a nod to iconic Italian designers — yet nothing feels staged. Music and film weave naturally into the space: a record player with a thoughtful vinyl collection, a beloved movie projector for slow evenings, and shelves lined with fashion and music books that invite browsing.
The house is fully equipped with everything guests might need, from strong WiFi and a 55-inch smart TV to a laptop, smart speakers in every bedroom, and all practical appliances for everyday ease.
The Rooms
Across the villa, up to sixteen guests can settle into rooms that feel warm, characterful, and each slightly different in personality. Soft wallpapers, carefully chosen textiles, and antique touches make every space feel personal rather than polished.
The bedrooms are spread across the upper floors, each thoughtfully designed with comfort and ease in mind. Beds can be arranged as singles or doubles where needed, and every room carries the villa’s signature blend of vintage detail and modern simplicity.
Bathrooms are well equipped, bright, and designed for both families and groups travelling together.
Outdoor Area
The grounds offer several places to drift between sun, shade, and long meals. A large pool looks out onto the rolling countryside. Beneath a canopy of grapevines, a sixteen-seater table waits for slow lunches and late dinners.
A wood-fired oven sits ready for evening cooking sessions; a fire pit is tucked into a meadow of helichrysum, and a flower and vegetable garden adds colour and fragrance to the edges of the property.
It’s the kind of outdoor space that draws everyone outside from morning to night — peaceful, generous, and deeply connected to its surroundings.
Location
Though set on a traditional strada bianca, the villa is surprisingly close to daily essentials. Within walking distance are a small mini-market, a café, and a newsagent. A couple of restaurants offering both traditional and contemporary local cuisine are also an easy stroll away.
A short drive opens up some of central Italy’s most celebrated towns: Montepulciano, Cortona, and Castiglione del Lago are all reached in under 25 minutes. Siena, Assisi, Arezzo, Perugia, and the UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia sit within an hour. Florence is under 90 minutes by car, or reachable by nearby train stations just 15 minutes away.
