No. 111 | Eighteenth-Century Minimalism

Italy > Sicily
users 8 bed 4 bath 5

This unique historic villa sits within a lush organic farm along the northern coast of Sicily, just a few kilometers from Cefalù. The estate has been in the same family for generations, with a Mediterranean garden carefully tended since the early 1700s. Today, it offers a peaceful retreat for those seeking an authentic connection to the land, local traditions, and the rhythms of Sicilian life.

Dario, the current custodian, has shaped the estate around a different kind of tourism — one rooted in place, authenticity, and meaningful exchange. Here, hospitality grows naturally from the surrounding landscape and its traditions. The villa operates as a working organic farm, producing olive oil, honey, citrus fruits, and vegetables, while years of experience have allowed the family to build a trusted network of local artisans and suppliers who remain closely connected to the property.

The Space

The villa unfolds around a central courtyard — once the heart of daily life for both residents and farm workers — with a staircase leading to the living area above and former production spaces for wine and olive oil below. Its 18th-century architecture embraces a restrained, almost minimalist aesthetic, striking a rare balance between historical character and modern comfort. Over time, the villa has evolved into a cultural residence: a place for reflection, creation, and quiet connection with the surrounding landscape.

The Rooms

The main house features four bedrooms and five bathrooms, thoughtfully arranged to provide privacy while keeping the communal spaces open and welcoming. The first floor blends nineteenth-century furniture with simple, elegant details, preserving the soul of the home while offering all the comforts expected today — from fully equipped kitchens to air-conditioned bedrooms. Natural ventilation keeps the common areas airy and refreshing, while Wi-Fi is available in designated workspaces.

A private cottage sits just 50 meters from the shore, with its own suite, kitchen, veranda, and living room — ideal for guests seeking additional privacy or extended family stays.

Outdoor Areas

Surrounded by centuries-old olive groves, citrus orchards, and a rich diversity of Mediterranean flora, the villa’s outdoor spaces evoke a deep sense of place. Guests can wander along garden paths, relax on the expansive terrace overlooking the estate, or follow a short walk across the dunes to reach more than 500 meters of private beach. Bicycles, a stand-up paddleboard, umbrellas, and beach towels are available for use.

The beach itself feels wild and secluded — calm in the morning light and glowing warmly at sunset — offering a serene escape shaped entirely by nature. A barbecue and shaded corners throughout the garden invite long, unhurried days outdoors.

Location

Set along an unspoiled stretch of Sicily’s northern coastline, the estate combines the quiet beauty of rural life with close proximity to Cefalù, just 7 kilometers away.

Cefalù itself is one of Sicily’s most atmospheric coastal towns, known for its golden stone houses gathered beneath the dramatic presence of La Rocca — a towering limestone cliff that has watched over the town since ancient times. Once a small fishing village, it grew into an important Norman settlement, and its cathedral, built in the 12th century by Roger II of Sicily, remains one of the island’s architectural treasures, famous for its Byzantine mosaics that shimmer in gold light.

Despite its beauty and history, Cefalù has retained a relaxed, lived-in character. Mornings unfold slowly in small piazzas over espresso and granita, fishermen still return with their catch along the old harbour, and in the evening the town glows softly as locals and visitors gather along the seafront promenade for the traditional passeggiata.
