Villa Tafuri
A former watch tower transformed into a luxury villa in the rural countryside of Salento near the historical town of Nardo and only a short distance to the white sandy shore beaches
Villa Tafuri was built in the 15th century. A fortified tower, build to protect the town from any incoming attacks off the Ionian Coast. This building has watched over its surrounding for more than six centuries. In the 17th century it no longer served the purpose of a defensive function. The family of Tafuri barons transformed it into a magnificent residence, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. You can still find he family coat of arms inside.
A few years back, during a bike ride through the Galatone countryside, the current owners the house which had been abandoned for several years. They immediately fell in love with it and brought it back to life by reviving its past splendour and adding all the comforts of the modern day. Additionally thet continue the farming that already took place here and replanted olive trees, vineyards and created a whole plantation of fruit trees.
The space
This Baroque masterpiece offers space up to 10 people, overlooking the countryside with vineyards, fruittrees and an enormous blue swimming pool. This villa has everything that Plinius loves. A place with a soul and history perfectly combined with contemporary, Italian luxury. The house is set on two levels with the kitchen being the heart of the house with opening doors both to the back of the garden, where the swimming pool is located and to the front of the house where you'll find a beautiful big table to host outside dinners. There are four serene bedrooms in the house, of which two are located upstairs and two are located downstairs. An extra bedroom is being created in the little building in the garden, so that there is space up till 10 people. Furthermore there are spacious hallways with original fireplace and cosy corners, so that everyone can find a little spot to read a book or to chill out.
The surroundings
Staying at Villa Tafuri offers a complete change of scenery, far from the crowds of tourists, in a unique setting in a stunning garden with olive and fruit trees and private swimming pool. The city of Nardo is small, yet very charming and only a 10 minutes drive away. We had an amazing lunch at a local Slow Food restaurant here. It is also just a few minutes from the Ionian coast, famous for its stretches of white sand and crystal clear sea, which might even give you the feeling you're in the Caribbean. The nearby baroque cities of Galatone, Galatina and Nardo in combination with the amazing food and stunning beaches made us fall for Villa Tafuri!
