Little Gem France No. 020 | 16th Century townhouse
A beautifully restored 16th-century townhouse perched on the medieval ramparts of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, with three generous suites, beautiful original details and views stretching across the rooftops to the sea and mountains. It is the kind of place where you will instantly feel at home
The House
Hidden within the narrow medieval streets of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, the house is a five-storey stone townhouse dating back to the 16th century. It has been thoughtfully renovated, preserving its historic character while introducing a quietly luxurious Provençal aesthetic.
The three suites each occupy their own floor, giving every guest plenty of privacy. They can be rented individually, rather like a small boutique hotel, with the open-plan kitchen and dining room shared between the three couples staying in the house. It is a lovely, relaxed arrangement, you might pass the other guests on the stairs, meet over coffee in the morning or share a glass of wine in the kitchen before heading out for dinner.
The house can also be rented as a whole, sleeping up to six guests across the three suites, which works beautifully for a family or a group of friends.
The result is something between a private home and a very small guesthouse: intimate, informal and with just enough shared space to make it feel sociable without ever feeling busy.
The Space
Spread over five floors, the house measures approximately 175 m² and has an unusually generous amount of space for a village house.
At the heart of the house is an open-plan kitchen and dining room, with a beautifully considered mix of reclaimed wood, natural stone and marble. There is also a well-stocked honesty bar with complimentary wine, spirits, tea and coffee.
A large cellar provides plenty of practical storage, with a professional washing machine, tumble dryer and ironing facilities. A laundry service is also available through the housekeeper. There is storage for bicycles, too.
The house has internal stairs, so it is worth keeping this in mind when planning your stay.
The Bedrooms
There are three generous suites, each approximately 35 m², arranged over different floors of the house.
Each has a super-king bed dressed in fresh French linen, with the option to separate the beds into large twin singles on request. The bathrooms are particularly beautiful, finished with hand-crafted Zellige tiles and natural materials, with copper or roll-top cast-iron baths and, in two of the suites, separate rain showers.
Each suite has air conditioning, installed in 2023, while the generous proportions and soft palette make them feel more like private rooms in a beautiful home than conventional hotel bedrooms.
The ground-floor suite has its own private terrace overlooking the medieval ramparts.
Outdoor Space
There is something rather special about stepping straight from the house onto the medieval ramparts of Saint-Paul.
The ground-floor suite has a private landscaped terrace with a table and chairs, while the house also has a balcony and shaded outdoor spaces where you can sit and watch village life unfold.
It is not a house with a large garden or pool, its outdoor experience is very much about its position within the old village, the views and the feeling of being part of Saint-Paul itself.
The Location
Saint-Paul-de-Vence is one of the Côte d’Azur’s great artistic villages, long associated with painters, writers, collectors and artists.
By staying here, you have everything is on your doorstep: the winding medieval streets, galleries, cafés and restaurants, as well as the Fondation Maeght and Fondation CAB Saint-Paul-de-Vence. The legendary La Colombe d'Or is also within walking distance.
Despite being right in the heart of the village, the house feels wonderfully removed once you close the door. From the upper floors, the views open out beyond the rooftops towards the Mediterranean and surrounding mountains.
For a slower stay, you can leave the car behind and spend your days moving between the village, its art, long lunches and the surrounding countryside.
