Little Gem No. 115 | Characterful hideaway in Bordighera
Tucked away at the very top of a historic building in Bordighera’s old town, this charming little apartment feels more like a lived-in story than a holiday stay. Just a five-minute walk from the sea, it is surrounded by the rhythm of village life. A place for those who are drawn to atmosphere, detail, and the charm of things that are not new, but well loved.
The space
The apartment is full of character and thoughtfully designed, balancing simplicity with personality. It sits in the heart of Bordighera’s historic centre, where bakeries, trattorias and small delicatessens line the same narrow street, and the beach is just a short stroll away.
Access is via very narrow, steep staircases, which immediately sets the tone: this is not a conventional stay, but one that rewards curiosity and ease with imperfection.
Inside, the space feels both cosy and airy. Muted tones, flowing curtains, and carefully sourced brocante pieces create an interior that feels curated without ever being staged. Vintage French linen has been reworked into soft curtains, a decorative tiled mural adds depth to the living space, and a trellis-style door filters light into shifting patterns across the floor throughout the day.
It is the kind of place that leaves you with inspiration long after you leave.
The rooms
The apartment consists of:
One bedroom with ensuite bathroom, fitted with an excellent firm mattress by “Le Matelas Français”
A charming living room
An indoor kitchen space
A small indoor lounge area upstairs
An outdoor kitchen
A private roof terrace
The layout is compact but well considered, designed for two guests. .
Managing expectations
It is important to note that there is no television, WiFi, washing machine, dishwasher, air conditioning or lift. The emphasis here is on simplicity, presence, and a slower way of staying, that's the beauty of it.
Outdoor area
The roof terrace is another wonderful place to spend time
In the morning, in soft light, the perfect place for a coffee while the village slowly comes to life below. The sound of everyday Bordighera drifts upward, creating a gentle backdrop to a perfect slow morning.
By late afternoon, the atmosphere shifts. The sun softens over the rooftops, and the terrace becomes a quiet place to unwind with a glass of rosé. In the evening, prepare a little pasta in the outdoor kitchen, as the sky fades over the old town.
This is where the house fully opens itself, unpretentious, warm, and deeply connected to its surroundings.
Location
Bordighera is one of those understated Italian seaside towns that feels quietly elegant rather than overly polished or touristic. Set on the western Ligurian coast, close to the French border between Sanremo and Ventimiglia, with a surprisingly mild microclimate that made it famous in the late 19th century as a winter retreat for wealthy British and northern European travellers.
The town is defined by contrasts: a relaxed Mediterranean seafront, lush subtropical gardens with palm trees, and above it all, the atmospheric medieval quarter of Bordighera Alta. The old town is especially beautiful. Narrow stone alleys, steep staircases, faded shutters, and sudden openings onto the sea.
Bordighera has long attracted artists and travellers, including Claude Monet, who painted here in the 1880s and was captivated by the quality of light and colour.
Today, it remains a place of quiet rhythm. Life here moves slowly; morning coffees, long lunches, swimming in clear waters, and evenings spent wandering old streets or sitting in small piazzas with a glass of wine.
The coastline is natural and slightly rugged, with pebble beaches, rocky coves and small beach clubs, where the sea is typically clear and calm.
Managing expectations
This is a home without television, WiFi, washing machine, dishwasher, air conditioning or lift. It is best suited to guests who value atmosphere over convenience, and who are comfortable with simplicity.
The building features very steep, narrow staircases throughout and is not suitable for young children. It accommodates two guests only.
