A Belle Époque villa in Le Bar-sur-Loup, once linked to the perfume families of Grasse and now home to five rooms and a celebrated restaurant.

In Le Bar-sur-Loup, one of the oldest villages in the hills above Grasse, remains one of those villages many travellers pass without ever stopping. Hidden among jasmine-covered slopes and overlooking the valley below stands a Belle Époque villa with a story deeply intertwined with the region's perfume heritage.

Built at the beginning of the twentieth century, the house once belonged to a prominent local family before passing into the hands of the Mane family, one of the great names of the Grasse perfume industry. Over the decades it lived many lives; family residence, café, restaurant, pension,  before eventually falling silent and remaining empty for years.

In 2017, owners Bruce Descatoire and Julien Durante reopened its doors following a thoughtful restoration led by architect Jacqueline Morabito. Today, the villa has found a new rhythm as a restaurant with just five guest rooms, preserving the atmosphere of a private residence rather than a conventional hotel.

The Space

What immediately sets the property apart is the house itself.

High ceilings, original staircases, period details and generous windows speak of another era, while the restoration has retained much of the villa's slightly faded elegance. Nothing feels overly polished or designed for effect. Instead, the house carries the quiet confidence of a place that has evolved naturally over time.

The restaurant forms the heart of daily life. Guests mingle with locals, long lunches drift into afternoon coffees, and evenings unfold at a pace increasingly difficult to find along the coast. There is a sense throughout that the villa belongs to the village as much as it does to its guests.

The Rooms

There are just five rooms.

Each has its own personality, shaped by the proportions and character of the original house. Antique pieces sit alongside contemporary touches, while soft colours and natural materials create an atmosphere that feels calm and understated.

Rather than striving for luxury in the traditional sense, the rooms offer something increasingly rare: individuality. They feel lived-in, personal, simple and connected to the history of the house.

Several rooms enjoy views across the gardens and towards the hills of the Loup Valley beyond.

Outdoor Areas

The gardens unfold in terraces around the villa, shaded by mature trees and framed by the surrounding landscape.

Breakfast is often taken outdoors, while the restaurant terrace becomes one of the most atmospheric places in the village as the evening light begins to soften over the valley.

From many corners of the property, the view stretches across the green hills that separate the Riviera from Provence,  a reminder that the Côte d'Azur is not only about the sea.

Location

Le Bar-sur-Loup occupies a privileged position between the coast and the mountains, just a short drive from Grasse, Gourdon and Tourrettes-sur-Loup.

Despite its proximity to Nice and Cannes, the village feels distinctly removed from the Riviera's busier rhythms. The surrounding landscape is shaped by olive groves, jasmine fields, walking trails and centuries-old stone villages.
