Little Gem France No. 015 | The rhythm of island life

France
users 3 bed 2 bath 1

On the island of Porquerolles, just off the coast of Hyères, this small hotel-restaurant sits quietly on the edge of the village square, under the eucalyptus trees. It feels less like a hotel and more like a family house that happens to serve some of the best seafood on the island.

Originally built around a fisherman’s restaurant, it has remained rooted in that identity. The rhythm here is shaped by the sea: fishermen arriving in the morning, a changing daily catch, and long, unhurried meals that draw both locals and returning guests.

There are only a handful of rooms, and the atmosphere remains intentionally unpolished in the best sense.

The Space

The property is centred around its restaurant, which spills out onto the square in front. Inside, the setting is simple: whitewashed walls, wooden tables, and an atmosphere that feels lived-in rather than designed.

Everything revolves around the kitchen and the daily arrival of fish from the surrounding waters of the Îles d’Or. The menu is dictated by what has been caught that day; langoustine, sea bream, red mullet, and other local species depending on the season.

There is no separation between restaurant and hotel life; everything feels part of the same small ecosystem.

The Rooms

There are only six rooms in total.

The layout is simple: four double rooms overlooking the square and two family rooms facing the courtyard. The rooms are modest in size but comfortable, with air conditioning, basic comforts, and recently renovated bathrooms.

What they offer is the rhythm of island life.

Outdoor Area

Life unfolds outside.

Tables spill into the square beneath the eucalyptus trees, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served depending on the hour and the season. The atmosphere shifts throughout the day, quiet in the morning, animated in the evening when the square fills with returning boats, cyclists, and island visitors.

There is no traditional garden or pool; the square itself functions as the shared outdoor space.

Location

The hotel is located on the central square of Porquerolles village, within walking distance of the port, small shops, and the island’s beaches.

Porquerolles is part of a protected national park, with most of the island preserved in its natural state. Beaches, vineyards, pine forests, and walking trails are all easily accessible by bike.

Access is via ferry from the Giens peninsula near Hyères.
