Little Gem France No. 017 | La Grande Dame de Seillans

At the heart of Seillans, one of the prettiest villages in the Var, an old 17th-century private mansion sits on the village square beneath a canopy of plane trees. At its centre, the Amont fountain has been running for generations, its water providing a constant soundtrack to village life.

The house is now looked after by Julie and Nicolas Malzac, who have made it their family home as much as a small hotel. There is a personal quality to the welcome here that is increasingly difficult to find: guests are invited into a house with a history rather than checked into an anonymous room.

The atmosphere is quietly old-fashioned in the best possible sense. The little yellow salon is filled with family furniture, books, artists' works and objects collected over the years, while vintage linens, old carafes and Terre de Fer ceramics appear throughout the house. Nothing feels overly decorated; it feels accumulated, loved and lived with.

And then there is the setting. Step outside and you are immediately in the rhythm of the village: coffee beneath the plane trees, the sound of the fountain, church bells marking the hours, crickets in the surrounding hills. It is the kind of Provence that doesn't need much embellishment.

The space

The house is intimate, with just 14 rooms, and occupies the upper part of medieval Seillans, looking towards the village's two distinctive rocky outcrops.

Life here naturally gravitates towards the square. Breakfast, lunch or an afternoon drink can be taken beneath the plane trees beside the fountain, where the boundary between hotel and village almost disappears.

Inside, the little yellow salon is the place to retreat to after dinner or on a cooler evening. Books, art, family pieces and soft lighting give it the feeling of a private sitting room rather than a hotel lounge.

The house also has a seasonal bistro, making the experience wonderfully self-contained. 

The bedrooms

The 14 rooms are individually decorated and deliberately retain the character of the old house. There are four categories, from smaller double rooms to spacious rooms overlooking the fountain and the famous Deux Rocs.

The largest rooms are around 35 square metres, with views across the Amont fountain and the two rocks, while the smaller rooms are more intimate and cosy. All rooms are air-conditioned and have Wi-Fi, with the larger rooms able to accommodate a cot or an additional child.

The charm lies in the details: old-fashioned linens, carefully chosen furniture and the sense that each room belongs to the same family house.

Breakfast follows the same philosophy. Served from 8:30 to 10:00, it is deliberately reminiscent of breakfast at home, with fresh bread, homemade preserves, pastries and, occasionally, something baked in the kitchen.

The restaurant

The restaurant is an integral part of the house. The cooking is seasonal and rooted in the region, with ingredients sourced from local producers and nearby markets. The menu changes with what is available, while the wine list stays close to home, with a carefully chosen selection of French bottles.

You don’t have to be staying at the hotel to come for lunch or dinner. If you’re in Seillans, this is an address worth making time for!

Location

Seillans is one of those villages where the best way to experience it is simply to walk out of the front door and wander.

Built in terraces into the fragrant hills of the Var hinterland, the village is surrounded by olive groves and forests, with ochre and grey stone houses, old doorways and small squares revealing themselves as you climb through the medieval streets. Its atmosphere has attracted artists over the years, among them Max Ernst, who lived here for many years.

Beyond the village, the landscape opens into the countryside of the Pays de Fayence: vineyards, olive groves, forests and the hilltop villages of Provence. The Mediterranean coast is within reach for a day by the sea, while the markets, galleries and restaurants of the Var provide plenty of reasons to explore beyond Seillans.

But the real pleasure is returning to the village in the late afternoon, when the heat softens, the fountain starts to sound louder and the square fills again with locals and visitors.

Nearest airport

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport — approximately 65 km / 50 minutes by car.

Nearest train station

 Saint-Raphaël-Valescure: approximately 38 km / 40–45 minutes by car. 

A car is recommended for exploring the surrounding villages and countryside, although Seillans itself is wonderfully walkable once you arrive.
