Some places feel less like a hotel and more like stepping inside a story.

Above Maison Empereur, Marseille's legendary hardware and homewares store that has been trading since 1827, this one-bedroom apartment offers a rare glimpse behind the scenes of one of the city's most beloved institutions. A few streets from the Vieux-Port and the bustle of La Canebière, it occupies the upper floors of the historic building where generations of the Empereur family have lived and worked.

The apartment itself feels somewhere between a private residence and a cabinet of curiosities. Antique objects, family heirlooms and collected treasures fill the rooms, each carrying a fragment of Marseille's past. It is an intimate space shaped by nearly two centuries of memories.

Mornings begin slowly on the covered terrace with coffee, tea and local jams, while the city stirs below. Then, just downstairs, awaits one of France's most fascinating shops: a labyrinth of enamelware, brushes, kitchen tools and beautifully ordinary objects that have largely disappeared elsewhere.

Maison Empereur is not for travellers seeking polished minimalism. It is for the curious; those who choose character over perfection and stories over luxury. Spending a night here feels less like renting an apartment and more like being entrusted with a small piece of Marseille's heritage.
