Little Gem No. 121 | Once a Great-Grandparent's Home

Italy > Campania
users 4 bed 2 bath 2

There are places where you feel you are staying in someone’s home rather than simply checking into a guesthouse. This is one of them.

Set in the countryside around Caiazzo, in Campania, this small farm retreat began with a very personal project: restoring the house that once belonged to the owner’s great-grandparents. Ilaria, together with her husband, slowly brought the old home back to life, carefully preserving its character and the traces of the family history rather than turning it into something overly polished or new.

Today, the house has become an intimate countryside guesthouse with just two beautifully considered rooms, surrounded by gardens, animals and the rhythms of rural life. It is a place for slowing down, cooking something simple, reading in the shade and getting to know a quieter side of Campania.

The Space

The house has been thoughtfully restored, with the original character of the building remaining very much part of the experience.

The two guest rooms each have their own private bathroom and share a fully equipped kitchen, which sits at the heart of the house. It is deliberately more like a home kitchen than a hotel breakfast room, a place to make coffee in the morning, prepare lunch with vegetables from the garden or sit around the table at the end of the day.

There is also an old cellar and former stable, both restored as intimate living spaces for reading, relaxing, small gatherings or perhaps a local wine tasting. The owners have taken care to retain the feeling and history of these spaces, making them some of the most atmospheric corners of the property.

The Bedrooms

There are just two rooms, each with its own bathroom.

They have been designed with the same understated approach as the rest of the house: comfortable, simple and connected to the character of the original building. Rather than feeling like individual hotel rooms, they form part of the wider experience of staying in this old family home.

The Outdoor Area

This is countryside living in its simplest and most enjoyable form.

There is a garden where seasonal vegetables are grown, and guests are welcome to collect what is available and use it in the kitchen. There is also a henhouse, where you can collect fresh eggs, the sort of small, everyday ritual that makes staying here feel quite different from staying in a conventional hotel.

It is easy to spend a morning outside, coffee in hand, listening to the countryside wake up before deciding what to do with the rest of the day.

The Location

The guesthouse is in Caiazzo, a small town in the province of Caserta, surrounded by rolling hills and an increasingly rare kind of rural Campania.

This is an area of small producers, family-run farms and traditional food culture, where much of life still follows the seasons. It is also home to Pepe in Grani, the renowned pizzeria that has put Caiazzo and its gastronomic traditions firmly on the international map.

From here, it is a wonderful base for exploring the surrounding countryside and discovering a less obvious side of Campania, one of food producers, villages, vineyards and long lunches rather than the more familiar coastal destinations.

What Makes It Special

For us, it is the sense of place.

This isn't somewhere that has been created to look like an Italian countryside retreat. It genuinely is one. The house has belonged to the family for generations, and the restoration has been driven by a desire to preserve its history and continue its story in a new way.

There is something particularly lovely about the small details: collecting eggs in the morning, picking vegetables from the garden, cooking together in the shared kitchen, opening a bottle of local wine in the old cellar.

It is a place where the experience is not about doing more, but about noticing more.

A Little Gem for: slow mornings, food lovers, countryside escapes, curious travellers and anyone who would rather stay somewhere with a story than somewhere simply beautiful.
