In the heart of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, within the ancient stone walls of one of the Côte d’Azur’s most visited medieval villages, sits a 12th-century apartment with an unusual literary past.

Once home to Jacques Prévert — the French poet, screenwriter and voice of 20th-century Parisian surrealism, the house still carries traces of its former life. It was here, in the 1940s, that Prévert lived and worked, overlooking the same village streets that today draw artists, collectors and travellers from around the world.

Carefully restored, the apartment now operates as a private stay, offering guests the rare opportunity to spend the night inside a documented piece of French literary history.

The Space

The apartment is set within one of Saint-Paul-de-Vence’s original medieval buildings, where thick stone walls and vaulted structures define the rhythm of the interiors.

Restoration has preserved the original architecture: exposed wooden beams, stone passages, and a sequence of rooms that feel more like a private residence than a designed rental. At its centre, a large fireplace anchors the living space, giving the home a distinctly seasonal character.

One of its most unusual architectural details is a vaulted bathroom accessed through a narrow passageway, adding to the sense of discovery throughout the house.

The atmosphere is not styled, it is inherited.

The Rooms

There are two large en-suite bedrooms, each designed for flexibility and comfort, with super-king beds that can be separated into twin configuration if needed.

Simple French linen, natural textures, and restrained interiors allow the architecture to remain the dominant feature. Rather than decorative intervention, the rooms rely on proportion, light, and materiality.

The result is a stay that feels residential rather than hotel-like, closer to living in the village than visiting it.

Outdoor Area

A jasmine-covered terrace extends directly from the apartment, forming a quiet outdoor living space within the dense fabric of the medieval village.

From here, there are open views across the landscape: the Mediterranean to the south, and the Alpes-Maritimes rising to the north. The contrast between sea and mountain defines the wider setting of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, but here it is experienced privately, from within the village itself.

Location

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is one of the most established artistic villages in France, long associated with painters, writers and collectors.

Within walking distance are Fondation Maeght, Fondation CAB, La Colombe d’Or, and numerous galleries and studios that have shaped the village’s cultural identity.

Despite its central position, the apartment retains a sense of privacy once inside, separated from the flow of day visitors in the narrow streets below.
