Typical House Friuli

Italy > Dolomites
users 4 bed 2 bath 1

Nestled in the enchanting hamlet of Sauris di Sopra, this historic home offers a holiday retreat that whispers tales of hospitality's alchemy through a house and four distinct apartments. This cherished residence, dating back to the late 19th century and once the home of Giuseppe, has been thoughtfully renovated by his great-grandchild. Each of the four floors, housing one apartment each, embodies a unique aspect of human experience: the grounding body, the emotional heart, and the reflective mind, each with its unique spirit yet identical in spatial arrangement and amenities.

Transformed into a modern alpine haven, this 19th-century family home retains the warmth and rustic charm of its past. The architectural nuances distinct to the Carinthian style in the region are meticulously preserved, blending the ancient with the contemporary. The interior has been renovated by the talented eco-architect Daniela Zambelli, an expert in this area. The restoration divides the space into three units - Toca Terra, Anima Monti, and Sulle Nuvole, symbolizing the body, heart, and mind, respectively, offering guests a choice of experiences from earthy groundedness to airy introspection.

Constructed using the traditional Blockbau technique of interlocking tree trunks, the structure stands as a testament to the time-honored craftsmanship of the Lumiei Valley. The interior, a harmonious blend of dark slate, wooden floors, raw stone walls, and waxed tin panels, complements the minimalist contemporary furnishings, creating an atmosphere of rugged charm and modern simplicity. Each apartment, including the cozy Dolce Vita with its additional sofa bed, features an open-plan living area with a fireplace, kitchenette, and dining area, seamlessly connecting the indoors with the breathtaking Alpine outdoors.

Whether you're drawn to the stunning natural beauty that envelops the home for peaceful hikes, bike rides, or ski adventures, this beautifully renovated 19th-century house offers a unique blend of timeless design and hut flair. The private garden with a barbecue, dining areas, and a sauna, along with the captivating views from every balcony, promises a stay that's as rejuvenating as it is enchanting. Discover the soul of this historic home, where every nook invites relaxation and every view connects you to the mesmerizing Carnic Dolomites of northern Italy.

The Surroundings

Sauris di Sopra, in the Udine region of northern Italy, sits high in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia mountains, surrounded by the stunning Dolomites. Its mountains, canyons, beaches, and lagoons mark it as one of Italy's most stunning and varied regions, yet it remains a hidden gem, even to many Italians. This might be due to its location on Italy's northeastern edge, bordering Slovenia and Austria, its complex history of invasions, including those by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, or the multitude of languages spoken by its inhabitants, which gives it a distinct feel from the rest of Italy.

Outdoor activities abound, from hiking and skiing to cycling. The village center offers charming shops, spas, a brewery, and restaurants serving local cuisine. An hour south is Udine, a city marked by Austrian and Venetian influences, famous for its historic Piazza della Libertà and a vibrant old town with a hilltop castle.

Spanning from the snowy peaks of the Dolomites to the warm shores of the northern Adriatic Sea, Friuli Venezia Giulia manages to escape the tourist throngs that overwhelm other parts of Italy during summer.
