Little Gem No. 082 | Into the wild
There are places that reward the effort it takes to reach them — where the journey becomes part of the story. This is one of those places. Tucked into the wild cliffs above Portovenere, getting here is no small feat. It’s a steep hike in — no roads, no rolling suitcases, and definitely no cute sandals. You’ll need hiking boots, backpacks, and a spirit of adventure. But once you arrive, breathless and a little sweaty, the reward is beyond worth it.
Clambering down the trail, surrounded by the scent of wild jasmine, lavender, and rosemary, the house appears like a little secret nestled among the rocks, with the most spectacular view over the Bay of Portovenere. That feeling — of discovering something hidden and rare — makes this place truly unforgettable.
The Accidental House
This special place is owned by Francesca, Roberto, and their two daughters, who fell in love with the timeless beauty of Portovenere — where sea meets mountain and life moves gently to the rhythm of Ligurian tradition.
Just a short distance away lies their farm, Terre di Portovenere, a five-hectare haven of olive groves, vegetable gardens, and honeybee hives. It’s a place rooted in nature and dedicated to a slower, more meaningful way of life — one they love to share with guests.
A few years ago, while looking to expand their vegetable patches and create space for their beloved donkey Stragiatella, the family purchased a nearby plot of land. As they began clearing the overgrowth, they stumbled upon an old, hidden house — long forgotten by time.
With patience and care, they obtained the necessary permits, restored the structure, and brought it back to life. And that’s where you’ll be staying: the Accidental House, quietly nestled in nature, with sweeping views over the bay — a hidden treasure born of chance, and now a place of peaceful retreat.
The house has been lovingly restored using ancient building techniques and vintage materials, keeping the original character intact. Inside, it’s cosy and full of soul: stone walls, wooden beams, a fireplace, and a mix of retro and vintage furnishings. All modern comforts are here, though — a well-equipped kitchen, a modern bathroom, and a peaceful bedroom that opens onto nature.
Outside, the terrace is the true heart of the home. Morning coffee, a long lunch, or aperitivo with the sea below and the sky turning gold — every moment here feels cinematic. And if you don’t feel like cooking, just lace up your boots and hike 15 minutes uphill to Rifugio Muzzerone, a mountain hut with local wines, Ligurian dishes, and a view that makes the journey more than worth it. It’s rustic and welcoming, the kind of place where hikers rest, stories are shared, and time stretches.
The property is surrounded by Mediterranean gardens, with corners for lounging, reading, and simply watching the light change over Palmaria Island and the castle below. Every hour offers a different perspective — misty mornings, sun-drenched afternoons, star-filled nights. You’re truly immersed in nature here, with only birdsong, wind, and the occasional bell from town far below.
Autumn and spring are particularly magical: long hikes during the day, followed by evenings by the fireplace with a hearty Ligurian meal and a glass of local wine. And yes, you can reach Cinque Terre on foot from here — the house is part of the area's ancient trail network.

Sailing with Aurora | A Journey Across Time
The story of Aurora, the family's century-old sailboat, is one of adventure, loss, and revival. Built over 100 years ago by master craftsmen using the finest materials of the time, she was designed with a singular dream: to escape the grey chill of Northern Europe and sail south to the warm, sunlit shores of Portovenere.
After a long journey, Aurora reached her destination — only to face one final storm. It proved too strong. The boat sank to the bottom of the Ligurian Sea, where she remained hidden for decades.
Years later, an Italian entrepreneur, captivated by the legend of Aurora, set out to find and recover her. With patience, dedication, and a love for the sea, he restored the vessel to her former glory — a mission of passion that became his legacy. When he fell ill, he made a decision: Aurora could not simply be sold. She needed a guardian. Someone who understood her history and spirit.
That someone was Roberto. Now moored in one of Liguria’s most beautiful ports, Aurora once again sails the waters she was built for — not as a museum piece, but as a living vessel for new stories.
Today, friends and guests are invited aboard Aurora to explore the shimmering coastline of the Golfo dei Poeti — where sea cliffs plunge into turquoise waters and secret coves await around every bend. Cruises can be arranged for a half or full day and include lunch or aperitivo on board, featuring regional specialties and fresh local ingredients.
Whether it's a midday sail with a plate of fresh pasta or an evening cruise as the sun sets behind the islands, Aurora offers a rare and unforgettable way to experience the beauty of the Ligurian sea.
