Perfect Italian Weekend

Perfect Italian Weekend - Capo Zafferano, Sicily

A perfect weekend in Italy without the limitations of time, budget, or distance. Every week we ask interesting and inspirational Italians, and Italians at heart, to take us along for a perfect, local weekend. This week, architect Giacomo Barraja will take us along on his perfect weekend in Capo Zafferano, Sicily

Introduction of Giacomo Barraja:
I was born in Palermo, the city where I grew up until the end of high school. Naturally, I spent all my summer holidays in Capo Zafferano. To me, it was just a normal place, but over time, my perception of it changed completely. My university studies took me around the world for seven years (Switzerland, the Netherlands, Australia, and the UK). After graduating in architecture from the Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio (Switzerland), I returned to my city, nostalgic for my roots and Palermo.

Coming back to Palermo, I saw Capo Zafferano from a fresh perspective. I realized how lucky I was to have the chance to enjoy such a unique place. At the same time, I felt that Capo Zafferano deserved to be shared with others. So, ten years ago, I began my journey in the world of vacation rentals, driven by the idea of not just offering a stay but creating unique experiences.

I am deeply passionate about architecture and design. Today, I work as an architect in Palermo, but I also cherish breathing new life into beautiful spaces in Palermo that have potential appeal for tourism. I love any form of creative expression and am particularly drawn to exploring and enjoying natural places. Meeting interesting people and enriching my experiences is another passion of mine, which is why I enjoy sharing the beauty of my villa with others.

Saturday

When it comes to describing the perfect Saturday and Sunday, it’s hard to explain in words, but I’ll do my best to give you an idea of what being here feels like:

When guests arrive at Capo Zafferano, they are always enthusiastic. They remember the ads and photos, but nothing compares to experiencing it in person. Their joy is immense as they often say, "I didn’t believe it could be this beautiful." The villa, the sea, and Capo Zafferano are all seamlessly connected. The architecture and natural surroundings blend into one harmonious experience.

The sea is the heart of this place. At Capo Zafferano, you can spend an entire week by the sea without ever tiring of its beauty. Whether relaxing on the terraces or swimming in the bay below the villa, the connection with nature is profound.

From April to October, mornings here begin with a unique sunrise over the villa. The warm sunlight illuminates Capo Zafferano, creating a spectacular scene. A coffee on the terrace becomes a magical moment. While it’s tempting to dive straight into the sea, I prefer starting the day with breakfast in Aspra, a quaint fishing village nearby.

Aspra feels like a place where time stands still. Its authenticity is palpable. I head to the town square by the sea, next to the old fishing port with its fish market and the charming Spiaggia Cammareddi beach. My go-to spot is Lorenzini, a local café famous for artisanal ice cream, though I usually start with a cappuccino and a fresh croissant.

After breakfast, I might take a walk through the small fish market and pick up fresh seafood like squid, shrimp, and sea bream, along with vegetables from a nearby cart. Back at the villa, I light the barbecue and prepare a simple, delicious lunch. A short siesta in the villa’s shaded areas is the perfect way to recharge.

Afternoons are for swimming and snorkeling in the bay, Le Tre Piscine (The Three Pools), discovering the underwater beauty. After a refreshing outdoor shower, I enjoy an aperitif at Il Nodo in Sant’Elia-Porticello, sipping wine as the sunset paints the landscape.

Dinner at Franco U Piscaturi in Porticello is a must. Their pasta with clams is exceptional, and the atmosphere by the old fishing boats is always welcoming. Back at the villa, the silence of the bay sets in, with only the soothing sound of the waves. The starlit sky blends with the lights of distant fishing boats, creating a mesmerizing end to the day.

Sunday

Sundays start a little slower, waking up to the gentle sound of the sea. After a quick breakfast, I might visit Solunto, an ancient Greek city just five minutes away. The archaeological park offers incredible views and a glimpse into history.

Lunch at the villa and an afternoon exploring Bagheria, famous for its Baroque villas, round out the day. My favorite is Villa Palagonia, with its mirrored hall and unique statues.

For a final aperitif, I return to Aspra, enjoying a spritz at Tichè while watching the sunset. Dinner at Pizzeria La Punta in Porticello ends the weekend on a high note, with its charming harbor-side setting and delicious pizzas.

Returning to the villa, the tranquility of the coast greets me again, reminding me of how special this place is. Capo Zafferano is not just a destination—it’s an experience, a harmony of modern design, nature, and Sicilian culture.
