Art Hangar
Set in the rolling hills of Tuscany, this 1960s former pottery factory has been transformed to a truly unique place with a stunning view of the mysterious medieval ruins of the castle of Montelifré.
In 1999 the great Austrian sculptor Reinhold Traxl transformed the former pottery factory and it was then that the real story of Hangar began.
Traxl being not only an artist but also an innovative architect, teamed up with his friend Peter Thurner, an Austrian architect. Working with the building’s cavernous floor plate, the duo created a flexible ‘box’ with vast glass openings that can be closed by drawing across moveable iron curtains.
A very modern concept which allows the glorious countryside to be present within the large rooms of the apartment, creating a unique living condition for the guests of the Art Hangar, whatever the weather conditions (too much sun, rain, …)
For Dreamers
This is a very rare example of modern and visionary architecture in Tuscany, a contemporary interpretation of living in this region that not only respects the beauty of nature, but pays homage to it. In 2013 Traxl sold his ‘atelier-house’. The new owner, a free spirit, has seamlessly carried on with the project started by Reinhold, faithful to his vision.
Today, Art-Hangar remains the home of choice of artists, dreamers, experimenters, architects, all who want to step away from the beaten path.
The Space
Central to the living area is an open fireplace, an arresting modern creation by Australian artist David McKee. Design furniture, a fully equipped kitchen and a private wine cellar make this 220 m² space a vibrant, but at the same time, relaxing place with nature on display from all sides through the glass walls.
Two bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom complete with rain showers and completely air conditioned, are suited to accommodate 4 guests. Both bathrooms have access to a big bathtub and an outdoor shower.
Pool area
The infinity pool (20 meter)has its own private bathroom, located inside the former electricity tower. Nearby is a former naval container that houses a sauna and a terrace in front of it from which guests can enjoy breathtaking views of nature around as well as impressive views of mysterious castle of Montelifré.
The Tuscan landscape and surrounding private garden are harmoniously integrated with design furniture and contemporary art sculptures are to be found everywhere around the hangar.
In the open space, next to the loft, is the perfect space for a (business) meeting, a party or just to relax.
Location
Art Hangar is located in the rolling foothills of Tuscany and a 5 minute drive from Montisi. Montisi is a tiny medieval hilltopvillage with fewer than 400 inhabitants and yet it is vibrant, exciting and welcoming. With its winding streets beautifully decorated with flowers and often with the flags of the Contrade (districts) flying high. This village gives a real insight into Italian life. Unsurprisingly it is known in the area as ‘vivace’ or lively. The community is very active and there are many village parties that everyone is more then welcome to join.

Inspirational: The Art Hangar is such an inspirational place to be, surrounded by art, nature and contemporary interior design.
The pool: I have seen many extraordinary pool, but could this possibly be the most beautiful pool?!
The building: In the 1960 build as a pottery factory and later transformed in an artist studio. The renovation has been done in such a unique and ground-break way, which makes this a unique building in itself. However, to find this building in the Tuscan countryside (where most properties are traditional and there are many building restrictions) makes this even more extraordinary.
