Casa Giardino
The ancient hill town of Spello is firmly off the tourist trail, even though or perhaps because it has 2 famous towns nearby. Instead Spello bustles with locals and life it quintessentially Italian. Tucked away down a cobbled street is Casa Giardino, a 1920s villa (fully renovated in 2013) owned by decorator Andrea Falkner. Her collection of furniture, art and textiles from her travels all over the world combined with the 1920s architecture of the building makes this one of the most original townhouses in Italy. Cobalt blue double showers contrast with exposed brick walls and wooden beams. Located on the edge of town, the garden overflows with wild roses, jasmine and lavender and has an uninterrupted view of the Chiona Valley. The terrace is a heavenly place to sit to enjoy an aperitif as swallows dip in and out the pool and the rose-pink sun sets behind the Umbrian hills.
The Space
Kitchen & living room: This smartly designed room features a kitchen and dining area with a table for eight, and a lounging area with a plush sofa lined with aged linen. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking a good meal. Hidden behind an antique door is a flat-screen satellite TV. The floors are in soft grey tones offset by the room’s green accents.
Master bedroom: A small staircase leads up to the master bedroom, with its marvelous views of the garden and surrounding landscape. The king-size bed is by Minotti, the curtains are made from delicate Indian cotton, and a lovely Moroccan rug warms the floor. The en-suite bathroom is modern and elegant with twin rain showers, toilet and bidet.
The Blue room: is on the ground floor and has its own private entrance. Cool white walls under ancient vaults, old terracotta floors, rich fabrics, king-size bed by Gervasoni and ocean-blue accents. The en-suite bathroom offers twin rain showers and an antique marble washbasin.
The Yellow Room: is on the lower garden level, down broad stone steps. This is a lovely, serene room with a king-size bed by Flou and charming side tables by Gervasoni. Yellows and greens compete for attention with mementos brought from Laos, Cambodia and Burma. The room has a complete bathroom with shower and toilet.
Garden: Umbria enjoys an excellent climate and life is mostly lived outdoors. Eating, reading and relaxing are favourite pastimes after a long day spent exploring the region. The Garden House offers the ideal setting: a lawn with inviting loungers and vintage garden furniture, the shade of the trees, and a small natural stone swimming pool. Forget noises and traffic and enjoy the vast beauty of the Italian landscape.
Privacy: The Casa Giardino is not suitable for small children as the rooms are not connected. The Kitchen and Living area is on the first floor, the master bedroom is on the mezzanine, the Blue and Yellow rooms are accessible only from the garden. Perfect setting for families with teenagers or for a group of friends, as every room has its private entrance and plenty of privacy.
