Castello di Ama
Castello di Ama
In the heart of Tuscany's Chianti Classico region, there is a place where history whispers from the vineyards and art speaks from the ancient dwellings. Castello di Ama isn't just a winery; it's a realm where time, nature, and creativity intertwine and an Etruscan legacy which blends with tales of medieval families and empires. The Castello di Ama Estate, once a stronghold during the Holy Roman Empire, bears scars and stories of bygone eras. The rebuilt dwellings, standing on the ruins of an ancient castle, speak of resilience and rebirth.
The vineyards of Castello di Ama, spread across four valleys, are a testament to the Estate's commitment to producing wines that reflect the unique terroir. Each vineyard contributes to a range of wines celebrated for their craftsmanship, such as the Gran Selezione San Lorenzo and the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, both a symphony of tradition and innovation. The Wine Tastings events take place in the elegant wine library, situated within the historic Villa Pianigiani.
The uniqueness of Castello di Ama is its fusion of wine and art. The Estate houses an impressive collection of contemporary art by world-renowned artists. For example, Anish Kapoor's light installation called Ama where he plays with the perceptions of space, form, and colour in a tiny chapel. Hidden deep within the winery’s cellar you will discover Louise Bourgeois' intriguing sculpture Topiary, which is viewed from above from a small opening in the floor. All the 18 site-specific art works are created to resonate with the unique atmosphere of Castello di Ama.
In the words of owner and Managing Director Lorenza Sebasti; “We feel it is a necessity to preserve the intimate experience of art and wine. For us the artworks, integrated into small, carefully chosen spaces, demand a tranquillity that crowds might disrupt”. This commitment to maintaining an environment where art and wine can be appreciated in peace makes Castello di Ama a uniquely serene retreat. Each artwork, carefully chosen and lovingly integrated into the Estate, is a piece of a story that will continue to unfold for decades to come.
The Estate offers accommodation in the 18th-century Villa Ricucci, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the Castello di Ama experience. Each suite is more than just a room; it's a portal to the past. The villa, with its rustic charm and humble luxury, offers a rare chance to live within history, even if just for a night.
The restaurant Ristoro di Castello di Ama is located in the majestic, 18th century Villa Pianigiani. The three-course menu is designed to enhance the tasting of the Castello di Ama's Fine Wines.
The owners and visionaries, Lorenza Sebasti and Marco Pallanti have so well preserved this part of Tuscany that it is a privilege to experience not just a vineyard and nature but also the architecture, art, and interiors.
